Montpelier is an energetic and radiant university town with squares, gardens and regal mansions. The town of Nīmes is built around a Roman amphitheatre and Perpignan offers the instantly identifiable characteristics of Catalan.
A wealth of history lies in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Roman monuments, Greek ruins, medieval castles and ancient villages are set amidst a patchwork of vineyards, farmlands, mountains and plateaus.
The walled city of Carcassonne (the largest medieval walled city in Europe) encompasses towers, dungeons, moats and drawbridges. It serves as one of the most impressive examples of medieval France, and possibly even the world! Many of the citadels and fortresses are perched high atop cliffs and Rocky Mountains, fantastic for photographs and simply mind-blowing to see. The Chateau de Peyrepertuse provides an overwhelming panoramic view from outrageous heights and again is great for taking pictures. Ruins of the former Cathare castles can be seen throughout the region.
